Our History
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, under the leadership of Rev. Doug Olson, was chartered as a congregation of the ELCA on September 13, 1987. During its first three years of existence, worship was held at Oscar Howe Elementary school on the west side of Sioux Falls.Holy Cross moved into its first facility on South Marion Road in western Sioux Falls in the fall of 1989. The church included a sanctuary with seating for 165, fellowship hall, three classrooms and office space.
This facility served the young, vibrant congregation well although very soon it became obvious that more space would soon be needed to accommodate the congregation's continuous growth!
A decision was made in 1995 to purchase land for a new facility on Sertoma Avenue. The congregation moved into its current home in February 1997. This facility is a 20,771 square foot building including a sanctuary with seating for 440.
Holy Cross has dramatically grown since moving into this facility. The baptized membership was 858 in 1996 and has grown to over 2,100 in 2006. Growth continues to flourish and plans are being made to support this growth including: additions in staff, programs, parking and facilities.
